A root canal is one of the most commonly misunderstood and anxiety-causing dental procedures. Many people avoid dental treatment because of misconceptions, which often means going without essential care. Knowing the truth will allow you to feel comfortable in going through the procedure, and below are several myths debunked.

3 Myths About Root Canals

1. They’re Painful

You won't feel any pain during the actual root canal procedure. The pain leading up to it is much more significant than anything you'll experience. In the course of the procedure, you will be completely anesthetized and will only feel pressure around the treated area. Following the procedure, you can expect some discomfort, but your dentist will prescribe painkillers to help.

2. They Cause Cancer

During the early 20th century, there was a rumor that root canals caused cancer. It comes from poorly handled testing, however, which the dentistry community does not support. There is a claim that 97% of cancer patients have previously had a root canal. There is no evidence tying root canals to other diseases, and repeat tests have failed to confirm the initial claim.

3. Results Are Only Temporary

When the pulp inside your tooth's canal becomes infected, a root canal is necessary. By performing this procedure, the infection will be removed, the chambers will be sealed, and a cap will be placed on the tooth instead of having it extracted. You dentist will put a crown over the tooth to protect it from weakening over time.
