An apicoectomy is a common dental procedure that removes the root-end of a tooth and fills the cavity located there. It is most often performed when an infection returns after a standard root canal. While the procedure is minor, a patient still needs to follow their doctor's recovery guidance so as to avoid complications and speed the healing process. Here are five tips to help you recover successfully.
A Brief Guide to Apicoectomy Recovery
1. Use Gauze to Control Bleeding
A moderate amount of bleeding is normal. The endodontist will apply gauze after the procedure; be sure to keep this in place for at least an hour. If you experience bleeding beyond this time, use gauze to gently wipe away any clots and apply a fresh piece of gauze over the area, biting to hold it in place for an hour or so. If you're concerned about how much you're bleeding, consult your endodontist.
2. Apply Ice
An apicoectomy doesn't always produce swelling, but if it does, ice can be helpful for minimizing puffiness and discomfort within the first 24 hours. Wrap an icepack in a dry washcloth and apply it to the affected part of the face for 20 minutes at a time, with 20 minutes between applications.
3. Take Pain Medications as Directed
If your doctor prescribed pain medication, take it exactly as directed. If you don't receive pain meds and are experiencing discomfort, over-the-counter products like acetaminophen or NSAIDs are often effective. Again, be sure to take them according to the label's directions.
4. Eat Soft Foods
For the first 24 hours post-procedure, plan to eat only soft foods like applesauce, pudding, and gelatin. Stay well hydrated, but don't drink from a straw, as this could break your sutures. After the first day, start reintroducing firmer foods as you are comfortable.
5. Brush Teeth With Care
Maintaining good oral hygiene will facilitate recovery. On the night of the procedure, brush your teeth and rinse your mouth gently. The next day, rinse throughout the day with saltwater to keep the incision site clean and free of infection. Wait a few days before using an alcohol-based mouthwash, and when you do, dilute it with water to reduce the stinging sensation caused by the alcohol encountering the wound.
