Propane is a safe, stable, and cost-effective fuel with a wide range of uses. However, it can be hazardous if mishandled. For that reason, the following guide looks at the safest and most reliable methods of storing propane bottles before use.

How to Store Propane Bottles

1. Keep Them Outside

It may be instinctual to store propane bottles in a garage, shed, or basement to protect them from the elements. However, if a bottle springs a leak or suffers damage, it is best if any gas contained within it vents into the outdoors rather than collecting inside an enclosed space. Therefore, store them outside to reduce the chance of breathing in fumes.

2. Store Them Away From Heat

Temperatures of 120 °F or above will cause propane gas to expand, and this can add pressure to tanks in storage, increasing the likelihood of valve failure, leaks, or other damages. To keep propane at a stable temperature, store it in a cool, shaded area away from heaters, open flames, or other sources of warmth.

3. Inspect for Leaks

While your propane bottles are in storage, check them occasionally for signs of leakage or corrosion. Apply soapy water to any connections and note the presence of any new bubbles to determine how airtight the bottle is. You should also be cautious of any gaseous smells.

If you detect leaks, try tightening the valves and hoses before repeating the soapy water test. If gas continues to leak, contact your propane provider for assistance containing the tank.

4. Store Them Off of the Ground

Melting snow and frost, puddles, and damp grass can rust metal propane bottles, so place them off the ground to prevent leaks. Wooden pallets, cinder blocks, or bricks will all provide a stable base with sufficient ground clearance for storage.
