If you use a propane tank to power appliances or your home heating system, few things are more important than keeping the tank full. Scheduling propane refills in a timely manner will keep all these systems functioning properly so you don’t experience any disruptions to your household routines. Here’s how you can tell when you need to schedule a fuel delivery.

How to Tell You Need a Propane Tank Refill

1. Fuel Gauge Reading

Residential propane tanks use a float gauge system. The floating component sits on the surface of the propane inside the tank to provide an accurate measurement of fuel levels on the gauge dial. The number on the dial uses this to give a number that represents how full the tank is.

For example, a dial that reads 50 means the tank is 50% full. If you know the capacity of your tank, you can then multiply the tank capacity by that percentage—expressed as a decimal—to know how many gallons are left. You should get a refill if the tank is below 20%.

2. Sputtering Flames

When propane levels get too low, your tank may no longer provide a steady flow of fuel to your appliances. This could cause the flame or pilot light to sputter rather than burn steadily. This is particularly noticeable in gas stoves. If you see an unsteady flame or hear sputtering noises, it is likely time for a refill.

3. It’s Automatic...

To avoid running out of fuel, many homeowners find it best to be on an automatic refill program. Making a tank refill the responsibility of the supplier eliminates the need for constant checks and makes it nearly impossible to run out.
