Parking lot striping lets people know where to go and park when they are visiting a business. Because of the influx of customers coming and going, lines can easily wear off the asphalt over time, making it difficult to maintain order and safety. Before scheduling your painting contractor, use this guide for tips on how to prepare for a refresh in your parking lot.

How to Prepare for Parking Lot Striping

1. Minimize Inconveniences

Before you start any work on your parking lot, obtain an alternative parking solution for employees, clients or tenants who will need access to the building at that time. Inform your regular patrons well ahead of time to avoid any confusion or frustration. Additionally, clearly identify a path for pedestrians to ensure the parking lot is undisturbed while the work is being done.

2. Clean the Pavement

A film of dirt and debris will prevent new striping from bonding to the asphalt. Prior to painting services, you will need to ensure your pavement is as clean as it can be. This may include sweeping and washing the entire surface, depending on how often it is typically cleaned.

3. Turn off Sprinkler System

For paint to adhere to the pavement, it needs to be completely dry. Along with planning with your painting contractor to start on a day without rainfall, you will need to turn off your sprinkler system.

If your parking lot is fully exposed, the watering system should be turned off no later than 12 hours prior to striping. If you have some shade from the trees overhead, turn off your sprinklers 24 hours before to ensure there is enough time for the moisture to evaporate.
