Whether you’re a new or current owner, your boat’s outboard motor is designed to deliver reliable propulsion on the waterways. Regular and proper maintenance are important priorities to help ensure the craft's longevity. This guide outlines what you need to know about the motorized propulsion system’s operation, as well as tips for keeping it in top condition.

What Should You Know About Your Outboard Motor?

What It Is

An outboard motor is installed on the transom—the exterior, vertical section at the rear of a boat. The self-contained unit includes an engine, gearbox, and propeller or a jet drive. All of these components work together to steer and propel small watercraft. Unlike inboard motors, the outboard version can be removed for storage, maintenance, and repair purposes. When the boat’s engine is shut off, the unit’s skeg can serve as a rudder for continued navigation.

How to Clean It

Outboard motors should be thoroughly cleaned after each use. Start the engine to flush out all debris. The water pump will aid in the cleaning process, and the liquid flowing from the pump should be warm. If the water is hot, it could indicate the presence of twigs, rocks, and other debris trapped in the outflow tube. If this is the case, turn off the engine, and use a strong piece of wire to remove the clog.

Disconnect the fuel line so that any residual fuel is removed from the outboard motor’s carburetor. Always check the engine cowling for any water or fuel leaks after each boat outing. Finish by using an anti-corrosive lubrication product to wipe away dirt and grime on all parts of the motor.

How to Maintain It

Always replenish the boat with fresh fuel before each outing to prevent motor stalls. Inspect the fuel line, fuel primer bulb, and fuel tank for cracks, corrosion, and worn areas; replace these components as needed. Prevent shutdowns by checking that water has not entered the fuel tank and reviewing the tank vent to ensure it provides proper aspiration.
