How to Stay Safe on Your ATV

Even if you’re a seasoned professional, you still want to take caution when roads are slick. Speeding around wet pavements and asphalt can lead to a spinout, which can have dangerous consequences depending on the situation. Also, driving through swampy ponds and marshes can result in your vehicle becoming stuck, so try to find an alternate route if you’re unsure of the conditions. 

You should also take steps to protect yourself. Rain gear, such as waterproof jackets and goggles, can keep you as dry as possible during your ride. They can also make it easier for you to see the road in the midst of a downpour. Keep in mind that the less experienced you are, the harder it will be to operate your vehicle in poor weather. 

What to Do If Your ATV Has Been Submerged

Along with keeping yourself safe, you also need to take the proper steps to maintain your vehicle after it has been submerged in water. Water in your engine can do a great deal of damage, including blown piston heads. Firstly, do not turn on your ATV if you believe water has made its way into the engine. 

Next, completely drain the fuel and oil from the vehicle. Remove the spark plugs and turn on the motor to draw out any remaining water. Feel free to add oil and fuel once you’re sure all the water is gone from the engine.

Start the engine and let it run, but don’t rev it. Drain the oil again, paying close attention to its color. When contaminated with water, the oil will have a white, milky sheen. Repeat the process until the oil runs clean.
