Like all mechanical systems, boats require regular maintenance to stay in good condition. However, even with frequent checkups and repairs, watercrafts can still break down. Here are a few common causes of breakdowns you may encounter.

A Guide to Common Boat Issues

1. Power Loss

As you switch the boat into a higher gear, it should respond immediately. However, if you notice sputtering and a loss of power, it’s possible the fuel has gone bad. This often happens if the boat was left to sit with a near-empty tank and condensation developed inside the container. Always store the watercraft with a full fuel tank and add stabilizers if it will be off the water for more than a few weeks.

2. Overheated Engine

boatIf your engine gets overheated, it can break down. This can happen due to a water pump failure that prevents the engine from cooling. Change the impeller every year so that it can efficiently circulate cool water through the engine to prevent overheating.

3. Burst Hoses

If your rig is filling with water, you may have a burst hose. Turn off the engine and check the exhaust system and livewell water hose that feeds water into the onboard fish storage container to see which one is leaking. Swap out the tubes, or use a shutoff valve to prevent the livewell tank from pouring more water into the boat. Ensure the bilge pump is working to get rid of the water.

4. Loss of Steering Control

When you turn the wheel, the boat should immediately respond. If the wheel isn’t turning, you may have a loose steering arm connection. If necessary, use emergency oars to head to shore and bring the boat to a mechanic to have the system inspected. They’ll assess whether the craft needs a new steering arm connection to restore control.
