If you’re planning to spend time on the water, one of the best ways to do so is on a jet ski. It’s exhilarating, as the watercraft goes fast and is high-powered. However, when riding, it’s crucial to follow the safety guidelines. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Stay Safe When Riding a Jet Ski

1. Pass the Required Courses

With its motor engine and high-speed capabilities, jet skis are, in some ways, similar to cars and other motorized vehicles. They are classified as a personal watercraft (PWC) and many states require a certification or license to operate them. For example, in New York, only people over the age of 14 who have passed the state-approved boating safety course can operate a jet ski by themselves.

2. Wear a Life Jacket

jet skisDespite what you see in the media, any time a person is on the water, whether on a boat or a PWC, they need to be wearing a life jacket. Doing so is required by law. They must be the proper size and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approved. For tips on what constitutes as such, the USCG has guidelines on their boating safety division website. While it’s not required by law, you should also wear a helmet to protect your head.

3. Drive at Safe Speeds & Distances

Just like driving a car, you should never drive at excessive speeds. Even though there aren’t lanes and speed limit zones, be mindful of your surroundings. If there are other jet skis or boats nearby, maintain a safe distance. Don't try to zoom around them. Also, create a buffer zone so you can always stop safely.

4. Stay Sober

Again, just like cars, you should never drink when driving. Any accidents are further complicated by the potential of drowning. Even if there wasn’t an accident, if you’re caught by law enforcement driving under the influence, you will face a hefty fine or jail time.
