There are many factors that play into radiant skin health, including drinking plenty of water, applying quality moisturizers, enjoying a healthy diet, and getting restful sleep. Sunscreen is another skin care essential that dermatologists recommend wearing every day. Learn what makes daily sunscreen wear so important to your skin’s health and appearance here.

Why Do I Need to Wear Sunscreen Year Round?

1. Protects Against Premature Skin Aging

Two types of ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB, damage skin cells and cause premature collagen and elastin breakdowns, or two structural proteins responsible for supple, tight skin. UV exposure subsequently contributes to fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, and sun spots that appear as large, usually round freckles. All of these issues make the skin appear older than it is. Quality sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection creates a barrier between the sun and your skin to reduce this type of environmental damage and help you maintain an even-toned, youthful appearance.

2. Avoids Painful Sunburns

UVB rays are responsible for sunburns, or red, painful skin burns that frequently result in severe dryness and flakiness. Excessive exposure can result in sun poisoning, or when the skin blisters and can include symptoms such as nausea and a fever. Sun poisoning is considered a second-degree burn. And while sunburns are often viewed as a summertime issue, they can happen at any time of year, even when skiing and engaging in other winter sports. The sun bounces off of the sun, creating burns and temporary snow blindness that causes eye pain and blurry vision. Wearing sunscreen protects you from sunburns, sun poisoning, and snow blindness. Dermatologists also recommend wearing sunglasses and broad-brimmed hats.

3. Helps Prevent Skin Cancer

Both UVA and UVA rays increase the risk of skin cancer, such as melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma, by damaging skin cells. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with UV tanning beds as dangerous as the sun. Common skin changes from these cancers include precancerous and cancerous lesions, yellow discoloration, and benign tumors. The sun can also cause cancer of the eyelids and other eye problems, such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Protecting yourself with sunscreen and other measures, such as avoiding peak sun (10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) reduces your cancer risk.
