Dentists often recommend braces to correct misalignments in your smile. However, the traditional metal brackets can be unwieldy and embarrassing—especially for adults—which is why many people are turning to Invisalign®. This clear aligner is an alternative method that discreetly straightens your teeth over time. If you have questions about this treatment, below are answers to several of the most common.

What You Need to Know About Invisalign

What is it?

Invisalign trays are made from clear, sturdy plastic. During the initial consultation, your dentist will take impressions of your mouth to create a series of customized trays that you will wear during the treatment course. Instead of brackets, wires, and bands, all you have to do is wear the clear trays throughout the day and while you sleep. The only times you should take the aligners out are when you are eating, brushing, and flossing.

What does treatment involve?

Your dental provider will design a plan based on the position of your teeth and how much they need to be corrected. After creating the aligners, you’ll receive your first fitting to ensure they fit comfortably. The dentist will instruct you to wear the aligners for one to two weeks before switching to the next tray in the series. This will continue throughout treatment, during which your teeth will gradually change position. Visiting the dentist regularly ensures the process is proceeding smoothly.

Will the aligners be painful?

While you will likely feel some pressure and minor discomfort when using an Invisalign tray for the first time, this usually subsides within a day or two. Your provider may advise you to take an over-the-counter pain reliever if you need help managing discomfort, but this usually isn't necessary after the first few trays. Extreme pain is not normal or expected, and you should visit the dentist promptly if you experience this issue, as they may need to fit you for new trays.

How long does treatment take?

The length of the treatment depends on your smile and unique situation. For example, some people may complete treatment within a few months, while others may take up to two years. However, results usually become evident within a few weeks of wearing the trays. To watch your progress, take photographs of your teeth whenever you switch to a new tray.
