Properly caring for your teeth is essential for your health. Cavities, if left untreated, can lead to other oral diseases, and even affect other parts of your body. This makes regular visits to the dentist important. Below are also signs you may have a cavity developing and should make an appointment sooner.

Symptoms of a Cavity

1. Tooth Pain

Tooth pain is a common symptom and often one of the first noticed signs of a cavity. Since cavities are holes in your teeth, they can cause food and bacteria to penetrate your tooth, causing it to ache. This may be felt when biting down, at random, or when drinking. If you experience any tooth pain, it's time to call a dentist to figure out the cause before it gets worse.

2. Sensitivity to Foods

Your tooth contains dentin, which has tiny tubes and is covered and protected by enamel. As your tooth decays, this enamel wears away. When enough enamel is gone, the dentin is exposed, which makes your teeth vulnerable to certain types of temperatures and foods.

If you eat food that's particularly cold or hot, you may feel sensitivity or pain. Foods that are sticky or overly acidic can have the same effect. These foods are triggering the nerves inside your tooth, causing you to feel this way.

3. Visual Hole

If your cavity has gotten bad enough, you may be able to see it or feel it with your tongue. Cavities can be on the tops or sides of your teeth. Of course, not all cavities can easily be seen depending on location and whether they're in their early stages. Ideally, you'll have cavities detected and filled by a dentist well before you can see them.
