As the weather gets warmer, it will soon be time to shed socks, sneakers, and other full-coverage footwear in favor of sandals. It’s essential to prevent problems such as toenail fungus and ingrown toenails, both of which are more likely in the spring and summer due to factors such as pool outings and frequent nail cutting. Here are a few tips for readying your feet for the warmer weather.

5 Foot Care Tips for the Spring & Summer

1. Wear Flip-Flops at the Pool

Wear flip-flops or other footwear at public pools instead of walking around barefoot. Walking barefoot when so many other people are doing the same increases the risk of toenail fungus. Using locker room showers without flip-flops will also increase the possibility of ringworm and athlete’s foot.

2. Cut Toenails Straight Across

Always cut your nails straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. Cutting your nails down at either edge makes them grow into the skin instead of out. If you do get an ingrown toenail, do not cut it farther; use a recommended disinfectant to keep it clean. See your podiatrist if the problem becomes severe, such as if pus forms or you are diabetic, which affects foot circulation and increases infection risks.

3. Get Pedicures

The best salons also use disposable plastic in every foot bath to avoid cross-contamination and fungus outbreaks. Opt for pedicure services that include foot scrubs to get rid of dead skin from the bottom of your feet.

4. Keep Your Feet Dry

Choose breathable footwear such as sandals to keep your feet dry and fungus-free. Toenail fungus requires damp, dark conditions to thrive. Use antifungal powder when you wear socks, and avoid wearing cotton that promotes moisture.

5. Don’t Trim Your Cuticles

To decrease the chance of toenail fungus, hangnails, and infections, don’t cut your cuticles. Cuticles are actually scars that defend your nails against these issues. Soak your feet in warm water instead, and use a cuticle pusher to carefully push them back, as they will still provide protection from fungus and infections.
