Whether you are new to wine or a connoisseur, visiting a tasting room is a fun way to discover new bottles or figure out which type you prefer to drink. For the best results, go to the venue well-prepared. Below are a few do’s and don’ts to ensure you have a good time and know what to expect.

Do:

Eat beforehand.

Getting drunk at a tasting is a big faux pas. Avoid this by making time to eat a big breakfast or lunch beforehand. Also, if the venue offers snacks, grab one in between each glass or two.

Feel free to drink.

There’s no need to spit out each sample. If you want to drink it, it’s welcome. However, if you’re visiting a large tasting or multiple rooms in a single day, it’s also good to moderate your intake. It’s not rude to pour out a glass, but don’t forget to have fun.

Try wines outside your preference.

wineTo experience the most of the event, don’t prejudge specific wines. While you might have a preference for dry whites, this event could have the first sweet wine you end up liking.

Don’t:

Wear cologne or perfume.

Tasting wine is only partially performed by the tasted receptors in your mouth. You also need to be able to clearly smell the airborne compounds coming off the drink. This is hard to do when wearing perfume, cologne, or cosmetics that put off a strong smell — the taste will be muted or altered.

Plan to drive.

It’s very easy to end up drinking more than you intended at a tasting. Avoid drinking and driving by hiring a professional driver for the day or calling a cab when it’s time to leave.

Forget to buy a bottle.

It’s not necessary to buy a bottle when attending a tasting, but it is a nice gesture. If you discover one or two that you really enjoy, grab a bottle to go. In many instances, it’s also possible to have the bottles shipped if you want to buy a crate or more.
