A crown is a type of cap that your dentist attaches over the top of a weakened or damaged tooth. It is used to protect the original tooth, restore its size and shape, and maintain the comfort of your bite and the uniformity of your smile. Here is what you need to know about dental crowns.
When They're Needed
Crowns are needed when the structure of a tooth is unable to endure normal chewing movements. This often happens when a tooth is cracked or broken; when the root becomes inflamed or infected, requiring a root canal; or when a dental implant is needed to replace a tooth and its roots. In some cases, large cavities that are too big for a filling will need a crown instead. Some people choose to have a crown attached for cosmetic reasons, especially if the missing or compromised tooth is located near the front of the mouth and readily visible.
Benefits
A crown offers better all-around protection than other dental solutions. Your dentist custom-fits the crown to meet the specifications of your mouth, so it is tight, secure, and comfortable. Crowns are much stronger and more durable than fillings, with less risk of loosening or breakage. They restore natural chewing movements and function just like real teeth.
Process
Getting a crown starts with your dentist trimming down the affected tooth so it can accommodate the size and shape of the restoration. Once it has been trimmed, an impression of your mouth is taken to determine the exact measurements of the crown. Your dentist will then attach a temporary crown, matched to the color of the surrounding teeth.
When your custom crown comes back from the lab, you will return and have the temporary one removed. The permanent crown will be placed and checked for fit and comfort before being cemented into position.
