If you’re interested in adding a small guest house to your property, there are several features to think about during the planning phase. Taking all the different factors into account will ensure the space can successfully accommodate visitors or serve whatever purpose you intend. Here are a few suggestions to consider when discussing the project with a general contractor.

How to Create a Guest House

1. Optimize Space

The guest house will likely be much smaller than your main house, so you must make the best use of the space. Whenever possible, have the general contractor combine storage with other features of the house. For example, put a medicine cabinet behind the bathroom mirror, and install floating shelves on empty walls. Also, opt for furnishings that fill the space without making it look crowded, such as sofas with low backs or high legs.

2. Make Distinctions

Guests will find it easier to navigate the space when it’s clearly divided. This is easiest to accomplish if the house will be big enough to separate the rooms and areas with doors and entryways.

If your guest house has an open floor plan, however, the furniture and materials can help. For instance, let a couch serve as the border between the living room and the kitchen. When the living room transitions into a sitting room or foyer, change the flooring.

3. Add Interesting Visuals

Many travelers enjoy uniqueness in their temporary lodgings. Although your guest house should be universally appealing with neutral paint colors, don’t be afraid to include bold or distinctive visuals as well.

For example, it’s a great place to decorate with souvenirs from your own travels. You could even incorporate a theme, such as a beach scheme with nautical decor and ocean colors or a rustic country design with earthy hues.

4. Be Prepared

Visitors will have a variety of needs. Make sure the kitchen is completely equipped with everything required to cook a normal meal, and have at least one full bathroom available. Include entertainment options, too, like a stereo, small library, large TV, and Internet access.

5. Think Long-Term

Although you may initially use the guest house for visitors, it could serve as an ideal living space for an older family member in the future. To avoid a home remodeling project later, make your guest house senior-friendly. Build the cabinets and cupboards within easy reach, include wheelchair ramps and motion sensor lights, and install grab bars in the bathrooms and kitchens.
