Foot corns are bumps of thick skin on the feet that form due to friction and pressure. Although fairly minor, this condition can be uncomfortable for many people. Luckily, they can be safely treated and prevented. Here's what you should know about the common causes and treatments of corns, as well as when to see a podiatrist.

What Causes Foot Corns?

Standing for long periods, wearing ill-fitting shoes, and having certain foot shapes are all common causes for corns to develop. The body responds to pressure by inverting the skin into a cone shape. If left untreated, or if the pressure continues, it can eventually cause discomfort in the form of corns, raised, hard and yellowy bumps of skin on the foot. They are usually found below nail beds, between the toes, and on the sides and bottoms of feet. These bumps can be sensitive to the touch or you may notice discomfort when wearing shoes.

How Are They Treated?

If you want to remove a corn at home, there are some home remedies you can try. Soak your feet in Epsom salt and warm water and apply lotion with urea to soften the corn and moisturize the feet. After a few days of the foot soaking and applying lotion, file the corn away with a pumice stone. You can also apply castor oil to the corn and cover it with a corn pad. These home remedies can clear up the corn in a matter of a few weeks.

For even quicker healing, you can try over-the-counter salicylic acid pads, which can work in approximately two weeks. If over-the-counter and home treatments aren't working, then it may be best to see a podiatrist for help.

How Can You Prevent Them?

Since corns develop by your feet being forced in an irregular shape, the best prevention method is to find properly fitted shoes. However, shoes may vary by manufacturer, so ask a store associate to measure your feet and try them on before you buy. You can also ask a podiatrist for a custom orthotic to prevent corns.
