When the forecast calls for extreme low temperatures, your plumbing may be susceptible to freezing. Frozen plumbing hinders water flow inside the home and can cause pipes to burst. Here are a few ways that may help pipes that are prone to freezing and to prevent the need for emergency plumbing service.

3 Tips to Avoid Frozen Pipes

1. Open Cabinet Doors

Allow warm air to circulate pipes by opening the cabinet doors underneath kitchen and bathroom sinks. This is particularly important when sinks are along an exterior wall and more likely to be exposed to the cold. When you have small children or curious pets in your household, remove harmful chemicals and trash bins typically stored in this area.

2. Let Your Faucet Drip

Water is more likely to freeze in a pipe when it is static, especially at a fixture far from the rest of the plumbing system or in a cold area of the house.  If you have a faucet that is prone to freeze ups, leaving the faucet drip may help prevent this to some degree.  Make sure you slightly open both taps, hot and cold, to keep the water moving slowly in both pipes.

3. Keep Your Thermostat Consistent

Homeowners looking to save money on energy bills often program their thermostat at a lower temperature overnight or when the family is away. These slight temperature changes could be enough to freeze pipes. Program your thermostat to remain consistently warm enough to avoid freezing waterlines during winter.  Opening or installing a heating vent in the basement will help keep the temperature up when it gets really cold. When you travel and your home is left empty for several days, make sure your thermostat is set above 55 degrees.
