Your water heater provides an essential function in your home, so if you suddenly have a lack of hot water in your sinks and showers, you’ll almost certainly notice right away. Luckily, you don’t need to wait for this situation before calling a plumber to replace your unit. Here are some earlier signs so you can keep the hot water flowing without interruption.

How to Tell When It’s Time to Replace Your Water Heater

1. Discolored Water

Water eventually corrodes metal, so the inside of your tank may start to rust. When this occurs, you may notice discoloration coming from your taps. If this happens no matter the water temperature, the problem is likely in your pipes. However, discoloration in only hot water usually indicates corrosion in the tank.

2. Leaks

Sediment buildup and corrosion can cause the tank to fracture slightly, leaving small puddles on the ground around the tank. Eventually, these may grow larger and cause significant water damage, so address small leaks promptly.

3. Age

Generally, water heaters last about 6-12 years. This can vary slightly, either way, so you don’t necessarily need to mark the specific date on your calendar. However, if you start to notice any of the issues above or any slowing of your hot water and it’s been nearly a decade, it’s likely time for a replacement rather than repairs. You can usually find the installation date on the side of your tank for reference.  When your water heater needs repairs and has exceeded it's warranty, replacement is recommended.
