One of the pillars of home dental care, flossing removes food particles, bacteria, and plaque lingering between the teeth and gums. Water picks, or Waterpiks®, provide a flossing alternative by using water instead of filament to remove particles and bacteria. Here, learn about the differences between the two teeth cleaning methods before talking to your dentist about the best option for you.

Flossing Pros & Cons

Floss and similar products, such as dental tape, offer an inexpensive way to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Simply move the filament up and down teeth as well as gently under the gumline to remove decay-causing bacteria, food particles, and plaque.

You have total control over the process while fully cleaning between each tooth. However, flossing takes practice to avoid cutting into gum tissue while still being thorough. Flossing can especially cause the gums to bleed if it is not performed regularly and is often challenging for those with braces, permanent dental work, or mobility issues such as arthritis.

Waterpik Pros & Cons

teeth cleaningWaterpik products irrigate the gum line to remove bacteria and dislodge stuck food particles. They are easy to use, making it possible to access hard-to-reach areas in the back of the mouth and clean between teeth with minimal spacing. There’s no risk of injuring gum tissue or restorations such as temporary bridges.

While these teeth cleaning products help reduce gingivitis and gum disease when they are used correctly, they are significantly more expensive than floss, require storage, and may not provide enough pressure to remove all plaque deposits. However, they can be used in conjunction with other flossing methods to ensure plaque gets fully removed, and make it easy for those with dental restorations or braces to keep their teeth and gums healthy.
