Many people use their microwave every day, whether it’s to reheat leftovers, warm coffee, or defrost food. However, not all food containers should be placed inside the appliance, and using the wrong item could result in unnecessary microwave repair.

3 Items to Keep Out of a Microwave

1. Take-Out Boxes

The handles on many restaurant takeout containers are made of metal to provide patrons with sturdy and convenient transportation. However, when placed in the microwave, these metal parts can start a fire, causing a need for microwave repair. The electromagnetic waves released by the appliance will heat the metal handle extremely fast, and the material’s high electrical conductivity can trigger sparks.

2. Plastic Containers

This chemical has been linked to serious health complications, including infertility, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Additionally, some containers could melt from the added heat, contaminating your food with a plastic residue. When reheating a meal, always place your food on glass or ceramic dinnerware.

3. Travel Mugs

These cups use special insulating materials to prevent the outdoor climate from affecting the beverage’s temperature. Microwaving a travel mug won’t heat your beverage. Instead, the heat will damage the receptacle’s insulation lining or dry out the rubber seal. If you want to reheat your drink, pour the liquid into a microwaveable mug, then transfer the contents back into the thermos.
