Bourbon (also known as whiskey and scotch) is one of the most popular alcohols worldwide. And for every different type of bourbon, there is a different opinion about how it should be served and consumed. Although you may already have a preference for the type of bourbon you enjoy, learning some of the “tricks of the trade” can help you get the most from the drink – and impress your friends by showing your knowledge the next time you're at the bar.

How Can You Become a Bourbon Connoisseur?

1. Try Different Varieties

The first step to becoming a connoisseur of anything is to try different things. Ask bartenders for their recommendations, and don’t be afraid to try offerings from smaller or lesser-known distilleries. Pay close attention to the age of the bourbon. In general, those that are older (at least eight years or more) tend to have the most flavor, but “younger” varieties can still be flavorful. If you find a brand you like, try the other offerings from that distillery. Most use similar recipes with slight differences for an array of options, and you might discover a new favorite.

2. Order Correctly

barBourbon is best enjoyed either neat  (poured directly into the glass) or up (poured over ice and then strained into a glass.) A well-stocked bar will also serve bourbon in a proper glass, either a snifter or a whiskey glass. The correct glass is important because it allows you to smell the drink properly. The scent of bourbon is an important part of the drinking experience, and using the wrong glass can affect the flavor.

3. Keep It Simple

Bourbon connoisseurs never order their liquor mixed with soft drinks at the bar. Although some low-quality bourbons are improved by the addition of cola, adding a sugary soft drink to high-quality bourbon will only ruin the flavor. That said, a few drops of water splashed in the glass can actually enhance the flavor. Avoid drinking bourbon “on the rocks” or over ice, as that can numb your palate and dull the flavor of the bourbon.
