Maintaining a lush, green lawn enhances your property’s curb appeal and can make the backyard a more attractive setting for outdoor entertaining. If it’s currently not all you’ve dreamed of, installing sod can work a powerful transformation. However, even the highest quality products will fail to take root if you make one of the mistakes listed below.

3 Mistakes to Avoid When Laying Sod

1. Overlapping the Rolls

It’s reasonable to assume overlapping each roll of sod will ensure total coverage. In reality, though, it will lead to an uneven lawn with lots of lumps. Instead, line the rolls up as close to one another as possible without overlapping. Once the grass takes root and starts growing, this will ensure seamless coverage from one end of the lawn to the other.

2. Overlooking Irrigation

sodNo matter how lush and green the sod looks, it will need water in order to grow strong and healthy. To facilitate this, water the soil before laying down the sod, and then water the grass for at least 45 minutes after you’re done. Depending on the size of the lawn, it may also be wise to install a few automatic sprinklers so watering the lawn is one less chore you have to worry about on a daily basis.

3. Failing to Roll

Once all the sod is in place, go over it with a lawn roller. This will help level the grass while pushing down each patch of sod so it's as close to the soil as possible. This will make it easier for the roots to take hold.
