Regular trips to the dentist are critical for keeping your child’s mouth healthy, but it can be a scary experience for kids, especially younger ones. Working to alleviate your child’s anxiety will make future visits go more smoothly. The following guide offers a few strategies.

How to Combat Your Child’s Fear of the Dentist

1. Start Early

The American Dental Association recommends scheduling your child's first visit as soon as teeth begin to appear or by their first birthday. Visiting the dentist early on will establish a great oral health routine that is a normal part of life and will offer a fun and enjoyable experience for your child that they will look forward to!

2. Explain the Importance of Appointments

Ensure your child understands the importance of dental visits by having an age-appropriate conversation with them. Explain that the dentist is protecting their health by caring for their teeth, and talk in simple terms about conditions, like cavities and gingivitis, that regular checkups can prevent or treat. Listen to what they say, too, and reassure them when they express fear.

3. Have the Dentist Speak With Them

If your child is nervous about going to the dentist, feel free to let our practice know when scheduling an appointment!  Once you arrive for your appointment, we can address your child’s fears honestly, in terms that won’t spook or confuse them, and can discuss what happens at most appointments to help your child feel more prepared. A consultation will also begin the relationship between your child and our team, putting them more at ease and developing trust.

4. Stay Calm & Positive

You want each visit to be a positive experience for your child. Though it may be difficult, stay calm, encouraging, and gentle throughout the visit. It will soothe them and help them feel safe, even if it doesn’t seem like it. Ask if you can bring a small toy to keep your child occupied and distracted.
