Neglecting basic oral hygiene can lead to gum disease, such as gingivitis. No one wants to live with inflamed, tender, red, and swollen gums that are prone to bleeding. An untreated case of gingivitis can develop into an even more serious disease—periodontitis—that destroys bone and tissue. Fortunately, you can keep gum disease at bay with a few simple tips.

3 Oral Hygiene Musts for Healthy Gums

1. Never Skip Brushing & Flossing

oral hygieneBrushing your teeth at least twice a day is not only good for keeping your chompers clean and bright but necessary for healthy gums. Brushing gets rid of plaque, the bacteria-filled substance that causes gingivitis, and flossing takes care of plaque that can’t be reached with a toothbrush. Brushing and flossing are the winning combination of oral hygiene care.

2. Quit Smoking

Keeping your gums healthy is yet another reason to quit smoking. According to health professionals, smoking compromises the immune system and makes the body more susceptible to infection. It’s harder for the gums of smokers to recuperate and heal once damaged, and damaged gums are prone to gum diseases.

3. Stay Hydrated

Drinking water helps keep your gums hydrated by increasing bacteria-fighting saliva. Water and saliva wash away harmful bacteria and reduce your risks for infection before plaque develops. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day, or one glass of water every hour benefits your teeth and gums. So drink up and keep your gums healthy.
