Dental implants are metal posts that a dentist embeds into your jawbone, which act as artificial roots to hold prosthetic teeth. This procedure is for patients that are missing teeth and prefer a natural-feeling alternative to dentures or dental bridges. The dental implant procedure typically takes several months from beginning to end, with the total time depending on your particular situation. Find out what to expect before, during, and after the procedure so you aren’t surprised during your visit.

What Happens During a Dental Implant Procedure

Preparation for the Implants

Placing dental implants is one of the most complex dental procedures available and requires specialized training and expertise. To make sure your jaw and gums are healthy enough to support implants, your dentist must evaluate you thoroughly before the procedure.

The evaluation involves a comprehensive dental exam with X-rays and 3D images as well as a complete review of your medical history, including existing conditions and any medications you take. After you’ve been deemed healthy enough for the procedure, your dentist will develop a treatment plan for the following months.

During the Procedure

First, your dentist will remove anydentist damaged teeth and complete a bone graft on your jawbone, if necessary. They will then place the implants in your jawbone in a separate procedure. After they set the implant, there are several months of healing in which osseointegration takes place, and the implant fuses with your jawbone.

Once the area heals, your dentist will attach an abutment to the implant, which is the piece that holds your artificial teeth. Your gums must then heal before taking impressions of your mouth and having your new teeth made. Attaching the teeth to the abutments is the final step in the procedure.

Aftercare for Dental Implants

During the various stages of the procedure, you may experience minor symptoms like swelling, bruising, minor pain, and bleeding. Follow your dentist’s instructions for proper oral care during this time. Eat soft foods and always practice excellent oral hygiene to prevent infection. Go back to your dentist regularly for checkups following your dental implant procedure to ensure that they catch any complications early.
