If you’ve had a tooth extraction, your dentist may have encouraged you to consider replacing the lost tooth with a dental implant. Replacing lost teeth not only improves the appearance of your smile but also prevents your remaining teeth from shifting and decaying. Here’s what you need to know about dental implants.

Dental Implant FAQ

What is it?

dental implant consists of a titanium post and a crown. A dentist places an implant in the space where a tooth used to be. It feels and looks like a natural tooth. An implant is a permanent solution for replacing a missing tooth. Once healed, it’s difficult to damage or disrupt. On occasion, a dentist may use an implant to anchor dentures or a bridge.

What’s the process like?

dentistIt takes a few office visits to fix an implant. You’ll have a consultation first. Images of your mouth will be taken to ensure there’s enough tissue to support it. After that, you’ll have another appointment to remove any remaining tissue and position the post. When the implant heals, your dentist will fit a temporary crown onto the post. Later, a custom crown will take the place of the temporary one.

What are the benefits?

An implant restores the appearance and functionality of a full, healthy smile. A  post will last for decades, and a new crown can be fitted if the original one breaks or becomes worn. Patients with missing teeth may have difficulties chewing and speaking. Implants also prevent plaque from accumulating around the base of a tooth next to a gap. It’s hard to brush away food particles and plaque from teeth that neighbor a missing tooth, leaving you at risk for cavities and gum disease.

How soon do they heal?

The only healing required is after the post has been implanted. You’ll be on a diet of soft foods and liquids for a few days while the site heals. A dentist may also limit your activity. Initial healing should end after a week or two. After a few more weeks go by, when the post is secure, the crown is placed.
