As the cool weather starts to dwindle, you probably won't use your fireplace much over the next several months. To ensure it's in good working condition next fall and to avoid future fireplace repairs, thoroughly clean the fireplace and chimney. After months of use, soot and ash buildup can be hazardous and may damage the fireplace. Take a look at how you can tackle this task.

How to Clean a Fireplace

1. Firebox

The steps for a wood-burning fireplace versus an electric or gas one are slightly different, with the latter being a quicker job. For a wood-burning one, start by placing a towel or tarp on the floor. Scoop out any remaining ashes and large dust particles. Once you get the bulk out, vacuum any ashes that are too small to be swept up. Lastly, mix vinegar and water and let it sit on the walls and baseboard for several minutes before scrubbing them clean.

For a gas fireplace, turn off the gas valve and remove any ceramic logs. Similarly, switch off an electric unit. Since neither will have soot and ash, you can simply vacuum any dirt and dust. Gently remove or open the glass doors to clean them with a glass cleaner.

2. Tools and Accessories

If your fireplace has a screen, carefully remove it and use a nylon brush to scrub it clean with a vinegar and water mixture. After, lay it out to dry.

You'll need to know what material the tools are made out of. For cast iron, you can scrub off dirt and rust with a wire brush. For any stubborn grime, you can pour white vinegar on it and scrub it clean. If the tools are brass, use a damp cloth with mild soap and water. Then, use brass polish to keep the material shiny.

3. Chimney

Cleaning the chimney is much more involved and best left to a professional. During a chimney cleaning, the contractor will inspect the chimney cap and damper and look for missing bricks, mortar, and structural issues. They'll remove any creosote buildup and make sure there are no obstructions so you can safely use the fireplace again.
