Beginning with Dr Stills, craniosacral therapy has become an invaluable treatment for many ailments.  It has progressed in effectiveness as others studied this methodology and furthered its research and development.

Dr. William Garner Sutherland became a Doctor of Osteopathy after he saw his brother with health problems recover due to osteopathic treatment.  His focus was on how the cranial bones in the skull moved and what problems developed if they did not move correctly. In 1940s he taught a class on Osteopathy in the Cranial field at the American School of Osteopathy.

In the 1960's, Dr John E. Upledger, also an Osteopathic Doctor, noticed the movement of the craniosacral system while assisting another surgeon in a delicate spinal surgery.  In the 1970's and 1980's, he furthered research in the field with a team of Anatomists, Physiologists, Biophysicists and Bioengineers. His research confirmed Dr. Sutherland's finding about cranial bone movement. He founded the Upledger Institute where clinicians of varying backgrounds learn his techniques.

Now there are several approaches to CST as more research is done to back up the effectiveness of this healing technique.
