Getting a massage provides an opportunity to escape the stressors of everyday life and focus on enhancing your physical and mental well-being. This is meant to be a peaceful and relaxing experience, but if it’s your first time, you may be nervous about what to expect. Following a few guidelines will allow you to feel more comfortable and enjoy all the benefits massage therapy offers. Here are some tips for making the most of your session.

How to Maximize Your Massage Experience

1. Stay Hydrated

It’s important to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment. The various movements and pressure techniques used in massage therapy help stimulate circulation and blood flow and eliminate muscle knots from the body. Keeping your muscles and soft tissue hydrated will make this process more effective.

2. Communicate With Your Therapist

Don’t hesitate to let your therapist know what you’re hoping to get out of the session and if you have specific areas of concern you want her to focus on. Make sure you provide accurate information about your current & previous health, including hospital visits, surgeries, all allergies, medications/supplements, etc. You may think certain aspects of your health history are not relevant to massage therapy, but your therapist will use this information to provide the right treatment for your situation.

Also, feel free to give feedback on your preferences regarding pressure, room temperature, and music. The more you communicate, the better the therapist will be able to accommodate your needs.

3. Remember to Breathe

People tend to hold their breath when they feel anxious or if a sensitive area is being worked on. However, it’s best to continue breathing normally, as this helps promote full mental relaxation by stimulating the "Rest & Restore" side of your nervous system. Taking long, deep breaths will also send more oxygen to your blood, encouraging better blood flow to the muscles.

4. Relax Your Muscles

Tightening up your muscles during a massage goes against what your therapist is trying to accomplish. Instead, relax as much as you can and focus on being present in the moment. If you notice yourself tensing up, holding your breath, or breathing too quickly, tell your therapist so she can adjust the technique and pressure to better suit your comfort level. Your session will be more effective if your therapist works with your body than against it.
