Whether you’re a casual exerciser who prefers light aerobics or walking or a dedicated athlete training several days a week, stretching is essential to prevent injury and improve performance. But not all stretching is created equal. Active isolated stretching (AIS) is a program developed by kinesiotherapist and licensed massage therapist Aaron Mattes. Mattes introduced the technique over 30 years ago, but massage therapists still use it today. Here’s what you should know about AIS and its benefits.

What Is AIS?

AIS is a manual stretching technique that isolates the muscles you want to stretch. The stretch involves contracting opposing muscles and gradually extending the target muscles for no more than two seconds at a time. The stretch is to be repeated eight to 10 times, exhaling on the stretch and inhaling with the release. Massage therapists have seen wonderful results across a wide range of applications.

What Are the Benefits?

physicaltherapistAIS, like most stretching techniques used by therapists, is primarily focused on enhancing flexibility and range of motion. But unlike typical stretches, it can also help to restore brain-muscle connectivity. This connectivity may be lost if you’re unable to use a muscle for an extended period, for example, due to an injury or illness. AIS can also boost strength in muscles and other soft tissues, including tendons, ligaments, and fascia. These tissues are prone to injury if not properly stretched before exercise, just like muscle tissue. By improving strength, the range of motion, and flexibility, you’re not only safer when exercising, but you also have a better chance of avoiding injury in accidents such as slips and falls.
