TMJ syndrome refers to pain centered on the temporomandibular joint, the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull. Various disorders to the joint can result in jaw pain and headaches that disrupt everyday life. Treatments include surgery and, for less severe cases, Botox® injections. If you are unfamiliar with the term, below is an introduction to TMJ and the symptoms you might experience.

What Causes It?

Many factors contribute to TMJ discomfort, so the precise cause is often hard to diagnose. However, common factors include jaw injuries, chronic arthritis, stress, muscle tension, poor posture, and jaw clenching. Even chewing gum regularly is a risk factor. Some people are genetically predisposed to it, while women ages 18 to 44 have an increased risk.

What Are the Symptoms?

TMJ

Symptoms include pain or tenderness in the jaw and around the ear. It may make eating and chewing difficult. The joint may lock and make it difficult to open or close your mouth. Headaches are also common, as are clicking or scraping sounds when patients open or close their mouth.

How Can Botox Help?

Botox is known for helping smooth wrinkles by silencing localized nervous system signals. This prevents muscle contractions in the face and helps dispel furrows and creases. It has a similar effect when administered around the jaw.

It reduces inadvertent clenching and constant muscle tension to help relieve pain and other symptoms. It is administered by a trained dentist, and each treatment lasts about six months before the muscles return to normal and you may need an additional administration.
