If you've hired a contractor to work on your roof or perform a gutter installation, you may hear some terms you're not familiar with. "Soffit" and "fascia" are two common words in roofing work that many homeowners don't know. These are both parts of your roof that play important roles in protecting your home from the weather.

Soffit

The part of your roof that sticks out past your home's siding creates the eaves. The underside of the eaves is called the soffit. This area is usually finished with panels of aluminum, wood, PVC, or vinyl.

The soffit may have small holes in it to allow air to flow through; this helps cool the underside of the roof in summer, preventing the house from warming up too much from the sunlight hitting the roof. There may be vents or vent fans in this area instead, or the roof vents may be located elsewhere.

Soffit And FasciaThe soffit helps reduce your home's energy use by reducing heating issues in the summer, while also protecting the eaves from wildlife and ensuring birds and animals can't enter your home or nest in the space under your roof.

Fascia

Running around the edge of your roof, there's a vertical board, usually made of wood, aluminum, or plastic. This is called the fascia; these are where you attach your roof gutter, so they're vital for protecting your siding from rainwater that might stain or rot it.

Fascias can also be decorative, with attractive, curved edges. However, most modern fascias are plain. Together, the soffit and fascia enclose the underside of your eaves and protect it.
