Swimming pools transform backyard areas into private aquatic paradises. Since installing one is a significant investment that can add value to your property, proper upkeep is necessary over the years. Use the following pool maintenance tips to prevent repair issues and keep the water healthy and beautiful.

4 Pool Maintenance Tips

1. Prioritize Cleaning

Use a net skimmer to remove leaves, insects, and tree debris from the surface of the water, and empty the filter baskets a few times per week. Brush the steps, sides, and bottom to remove algae growth. Install a pool cleaner that runs automatically to collect debris and make your job easier.

2. Test the Water

pool maintenanceUse test strips to measure your pool water’s chemistry every two to three weeks. The pH should stay between 7.4 and 7.6, the alkalinity should fall between 100 to 150 ppm, and the chlorine level should range from 1 to 3 ppm. Add sodium bicarbonate to raise the pH and alkalinity, or add muriatic acid to lower it. Add chlorine or allow it to evaporate out as necessary.

3. Run the Pump

The pump circulates water through the pool system. It pulls water and moves it through the filter before returning it to the pool. Ideally, you should run the pump 24/7, but in the interest of conserving energy and saving money on utilities, run it a minimum of 12 hours daily.

4. Shock Periodically

Cloudy water typically indicates bacteria and algae overgrowth. Kill harmful microbes by shocking your pool. Balance the pH first, and make sure the pump is on. Prepare the shock in a five-gallon bucket, and pour it along the inner perimeter. After about six hours, test the chlorine level. You may return to swimming once it drops between 1 and 3 ppm.
