Storing older clothes or items you don't need at the minute might seem like a simple task, but there are actually a few things to consider before putting them in boxes. Carefully packing them is just one step to ensuring they come out looking as good as they went in. These tips will help you get your clothes ready for storage.

How to Properly Put Clothes in Storage

1. Wash Them First

Always launder any clothes that are headed for storage before packing them. Dirty clothing can begin to smell or produce mildew, which will ruin the integrity of the garment over time. Washing also ensures all stains are removed and prevents lotions, perfumes, and sunscreen from turning the fabric yellow over time.

2. Keep Items in Plastic Bins

Storage

Although plastic bags and cardboard boxes are convenient, they're not good materials for storing clothes. Cardboard boxes can be damaged by excess moisture, allowing humidity or water to ruin the clothing inside. If the boxes have been used before for other items, including food, there may be crumbs or bacteria that will attract pests that can chew fabric.

Plastic bags retain any moisture let in before they are sealed, subjecting clothing to mold and mildew.

Plastic bins are ideal because they seal shut, keeping out water, humidity, and pests. They also keep dust from getting in, and many are see-through, so you can access any clothing you need quickly without searching.

3. Store Clothing According to Fabric Type

When putting clothes in a rental unit, it's best to keep each fabric type with its own group to avoid damage. Natural fabrics like cotton, silks, and linens can be kept together. Silks should be kept between layers of the other fabrics so they can breathe. You can use cedar chips or lavender in place of mothballs to keep clothes safe from bugs, too.

Synthetics should be stored in cooler, darker climates. These can survive in acid-free cardboard boxes that come with lids, as long as they are in an area free from moisture.
