Fences create protective barriers between your property and the outside world. They’re especially helpful if you own a dog and want to make sure that your furry friend remains safe at all times. But not all structures are immune to a dog’s ability to dig, jump, and climb. If you’re worried about whether your pet will escape even with a fence, there are several steps you can take to dog-proof the system. Here’s what you should know.

How to Dog-Proof Your Fence

1. Create a Restricted View

One of the main reasons that dogs are so eager to run off is because they see something that excites them. It could be kids playing, another dog, a car, or a person taking a walk. Whatever the activity, it piques their curiosity and stimulates them to leap the fence. You can prevent that behavior by creating a restrictive barrier that makes it more difficult for your dog to see what’s going on. You can add a layer of bamboo or reed fencing to the backside of your fence to fill in the gaps between slats. Height regulations are enforced by local municipalities, but you can also ask your fence contractor about installing the tallest allowable length.

2. Install Wire L-Fencing

fencesIf your dog has a habit of digging holes in the yard, it won’t be long before they figure out that they can do that to escape under the fence. You can reduce their chances of success by installing an L-fence, which is essentially a patch of wire fencing installed at a 90-degree angle along the bottom of the fence. It creates an “L” shape that prevents your dog from digging into the ground. You can either bury the bottom portion underground or hold it down with heavy rocks.

3. Devise a Landscaping Plan

A creative landscaping layout can also put a stop to dogs that are eager to jump over the fence. Consider planting fast-growing greens to create an additional hedge of privacy along the fence. Common options include hybrid poplars, Leyland cypresses, and bamboo.
