Luxury vinyl tile and plank floors have become an increasingly popular flooring choice for homeowners in recent years. Many have opted to install vinyl sheets, LVP, or LVT flooring due to the material's versatility and durability. While these are all similar in quality, vinyl sheets come in large, uncut rolls, while planks and tiles are trimmed to size and shape. If you're unfamiliar with this flooring option, here are the answers to some frequently asked questions.

What to Know About Luxury Vinyl Flooring

How is it different from linoleum?

People often confuse linoleum and vinyl because of past similarities in appearance. However, today’s LVT flooring looks significantly different from before, making it distinct from linoleum. For starters, it's waterproof, thicker, more durable, and can mimic natural stone and hardwood more realistically.

Is luxury vinyl flooring difficult to install?

LVT flooring

Luxury vinyl tiles, planks, and sheets are easy to install—manufacturers even offer DIY kits. LVP and LVT flooring come with different installation options, such as tongue-and-groove locking, loose-lay, and glue-down. For best results, have a contractor install the flooring. They'll ensure the subfloor is smooth and free of imperfections, as any flaws underneath may show through the flooring’s surface.

Can it be used in the basement or outdoors?

Since luxury vinyl flooring can withstand moisture, it's an excellent option for basements. You may add a vapor barrier on the subfloor before installation for additional protection.

However, vinyl flooring doesn't stand up well outdoors due to direct sunlight—UV rays and extreme temperature exposure can damage and weaken the material. For that reason, refrain from installing vinyl options outside the home.

Will it hold up to pets and daily wear?

Luxury vinyl is known for its durability, thanks to its multilayered construction. It can hold its own against pets and heavy foot traffic, so go with a thick top layer—at least 20 to 40 mm—if you want your LVT flooring to last longer. It won’t hurt to take a few extra precautions as well to minimize surface damage, such as trimming your pet’s nails and putting pads or mats under furniture.

How do I maintain it?

Although vinyl planks and tiles are virtually fuss-free, you still have to clean the flooring periodically, as grit from dirt and debris can scratch the top layer. Vacuum at least once a week or use a damp mop. Wipe spills immediately to prevent water from seeping through the underlayment.
