Trees shed their leaves in the fall and stand bare in the winter. While they might look lifeless during this time, they're actually just dormant, which is the plant equivalent of hibernating. Learn more about how trees survive despite harsh winter conditions and what tree services you can perform to support their survival below.

Dormancy

In winter, trees have less access to sunshine, water, and nutrients in the soil. To survive, they go dormant, pausing growth and reducing energy consumption. The first stage of dormancy occurs when a tree loses its leaves.

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a chemical stored in the tip of the stem connecting the leaf to the tree. The release of ABA signals the leaf to break off and pauses growth by keeping cells from dividing. By suspending growth, the tree can conserve food stored in its roots.

How to Protect Trees in the Winter

Dormancy ensures trees can survive on their existing nutrient supply in winter. However, trees face other challenges when it gets cold, such as a lack of moisture. Cover the base of the earth around the tree with a layer of mulch about three to four inches thick to trap moisture, ensuring roots get the water they need despite dry winter air.

Snow, ice, and wind are also problems for trees in winter. When ice or snow builds up on branches, they may break under the weight. To prevent this, tie young branches together with a string and connect others to the tree's trunk for support. To protect against wind and avoid bark stripping, wrap the branches in burlap.

Finally, if you live somewhere rural, protect the tree's base against animals that may nibble on the trunk if they can't find food elsewhere. Wrap the trunk in a protective plastic layer to deter these critters. If you aren't comfortable performing these tasks yourself, hire a tree services professional.
