Routine RV repair and maintenance are necessary to prevent premature wear and unexpected breakdowns that put your safety at risk, reduce the value of your investment, and put a damper on your road trips. The windshield, for example, is prone to chips and cracks due to extreme temperature fluctuations and road debris hitting the glass while you drive. Here is a guide to whether you should repair or replace the front window.

When Should You Invest in RV Windshield Repair?

Size and location are the two main factors to consider when deciding between windshield repair and replacement. If the chip is smaller than the size of a quarter or a crack is fewer than 3 and a half inches long, an RV repair technician might be able to fix the damage. That's because the damage is contained enough that the resin used to repair it won't leave distortions in the glass.

A small crack or chip can also be fixed when it isn't in the driver's sight line. Otherwise, the resin patch could reflect light, which could create a glare that compromises the driver's vision. Getting the windshield repaired is also an option when the perimeter of the windshield isn't affected. Fixing a crack or chip along the edge of the glass is a bad idea, as the repair could affect how the windshield fits in the frame.

When Is Replacement the Better Option?

When chips and cracks are large, professionals will recommend windshield replacement over repair. This is also the case when a small fissure penetrates the deeper layers of the auto glass. Filling the damaged area with resin could leave a hazy cast in the window.

To replace a windshield, technicians will first detach the cowl, wipers, molding, and gasket. Then, they'll break the sealant to remove the damaged windshield. Suction cups with handles provide support in lifting the heavy glass. Old urethane sealant is removed before a new sealant is applied. The windshield is put in place, then the cowl, molding, gasket, and wipers are attached.
