Wisdom teeth aren't inherently bad, but they can cause crowding and discomfort for many people. If yours are giving you trouble, a dentist may recommend extraction. While this procedure is safe and widely practiced, it's an invasive surgery and will require proper aftercare. Here are a few tips to help you recover swiftly after the treatment.

How to Ensure a Speedy Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

1. Ice Your Cheek

You can expect some swelling and pain after surgery. In addition to taking your dentist-prescribed pain medications, icing your cheek can reduce inflammation and discomfort. Use ice packs, or fill bags with ice and wrap them with soft cloths. Place these on your face for about 30 minutes at a time whenever the affected area feels uncomfortable.

2. Control the Bleeding

It’s normal to experience some bleeding or oozing after an extraction. If you’re bleeding excessively, gently rinse or wipe the blood away and place a fresh gauze pad directly over the surgical area for 30 minutes.

Don’t chew on the gauze, as this will stimulate saliva and increase the risk of bleeding or injury. You can also use moist tea bags instead of gauze, as the natural tannins in green tea can promote blood clotting.

3. Eat With Caution

You won’t be able to eat solid foods or use a straw for a few days after surgery. Doing so could dislodge the blood clot before the wound heals, resulting in a painful dry socket. On the day of the surgery, you’ll be on a liquid-only diet to avoid putting excess pressure on the teeth.

Once the bleeding has stopped, drink healthy beverages, such as smoothies, or eat liquid-based foods like yogurt. Stay hydrated by drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day.

When eating, only chew with the side of the mouth that wasn't treated. Start by introducing foods like mashed potatoes and tender pasta, and then work toward more substantial cuisine.

4. Keep Teeth Clean

You may not be able to brush your teeth immediately following surgery because opening your mouth could be challenging. Instead, rinse your mouth with salt water to keep it clean. Don’t swish or spit too forcefully, as this could dislodge the blood clot.

On the following day, you can resume brushing. Do so gently, exercising extreme caution near the extraction site. You’ll want to continue rinsing with salt water five or six times a day for several days as well.
