Wisdom teeth are evolutionary byproducts, as early humans used them to chew nuts, roots, leaves, and meat efficiently. In today’s world, they create a variety of dental problems, including tooth crowding, infections and decay from partially impacted teeth, and pain. If you need one or more of these teeth extracted, learn how to prepare and what recovery entails here.
How to Get Ready for the Appointment
Preparing for the appointment includes discussing what type of anesthesia you want with your dentist. Some patients are fine with nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, which prevents extraction pain but allows them to stay awake. Others prefer general anesthesia for various reasons, such as nervousness and phobias.
You'll need at least a few days to recover, so take a few days off from work or school. Ensure a friend, family member, or partner can drive you to and from the appointment, as you will be unable to operate a vehicle because of the anesthesia. Stock up on supplies beforehand, including gauze for your mouth and lots of soft foods to eat.
Aftercare Tips
Blood clots form in the resulting wisdom teeth holes, and you will receive gauze for excess blood absorption. Change the gauze when necessary and do not spit, brush or floss your teeth, or rinse your mouth during the initial 24 hours. Any of these activities can cause the clots to dislodge.
Keep your head elevated and the extraction sites iced for the first few days to minimize swelling and pain. Once you are cleared to gently rinse your mouth with salt water, do so to prevent bacteria from accumulating and possibly infecting the tooth holes.
Maintain a soft food diet for the first week after your procedure, as hard and crunchy foods can dislodge the clots and cause pain in sensitive gum tissue. Sip water instead of using a straw, which creates pressure in the mouth that can disturb the clots.
You’ll want to rest for at least four days to help your body heal quickly.
