Gum recession is a potentially serious oral health concern that can lead to increased tooth decay, inflammation, and bone and tooth loss. The main cause of receding gums is periodontal disease, which nearly half of all adults over age 30 suffer from to some extent. Fortunately, there are steps you and your dentist can take to prevent this issue; learn about three of them below.
How to Prevent Receding Gums
1. Brush Regularly—But Gently
Poor oral hygiene is a leading contributor to gum disease and recession, so the first step is to brush and floss regularly. Brush your teeth at least two times a day, devoting a minimum of two minutes to each session. Floss at least once daily, ideally before bed. But remember: You don't need to brush or floss vigorously. It could actually end up doing more harm than good, pushing the gums back or causing them to bleed or eroding your tooth enamel. Instead, brush and floss with consistent but gentle pressure.
2. Invest in a Mouthguard
A staggering 90 percent of the population grinds their teeth to some degree. This condition, called bruxism, can exert significant pressure on the teeth and gums and cause the gums to recede. If you're one of the 90 percent, consult your dentist about getting a mouthguard. This is a comfortable device made of malleable plastic that fits around the teeth and prevents grinding damage.
3. Avoid Lip & Tongue Piercings
Lip or tongue piercings may look cool, but they can rub against the gums and cause irritation. Over time, this can lead to gum recession. If you have any mouth piercings, consider removing them for the health of your gums. Your dentist can advise you on the next steps to take to help your mouth heal after a piercing removal and to maintain better oral health moving forward.
