Wet road conditions can make driving more challenging. Not surprisingly, there is typically an increase in car accidents when it rains, resulting in injuries, vehicle damage, and auto insurance claims. To stay safe on the roads, remember these tips.

How to Drive Safely When It's Raining

1. Drive Defensively

Driving defensively means that you drive in such a way that you can identify hazards and have enough time to effectively respond to them. Wet roads can make it harder to control your vehicle. Scan the road in front of and along the sides of your vehicle, allowing yourself enough time to come to a stop if needed.

Pay attention to other vehicles, especially brake lights in front of you, and avoid road hazards whenever possible. Allow yourself extra time to get where you're going, and drive slowly, deliberately, and mindfully.

2. Increase Following Distance

By increasing your following distance, you will have enough space to come to a smooth stop or to pass the vehicle in front. In normal conditions, three seconds is the general rule for following distance. But on wet roads, increase that distance to eight to 10 seconds.

3. Know How to Respond to Skids

Wet roads don't offer the traction of dry ones, so skidding is more common. If you feel your car skidding, don't panic, and don't slam on the brakes. For a front wheel skid, let up on the gas pedal. The front wheels should regain traction fairly quickly, and you can then turn the wheel in the direction you want to go.

For a rear wheel skid, take your foot off the gas and turn the wheel in the direction that the rear of the vehicle is moving. The tires will regain traction faster, and you'll be able to recover control of the vehicle.
