As one of the biggest names in photography, it should come as no surprise that Nikon® cameras have been around for more than 65 years. Made by Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō Kabushikigaisha (Japan Optical Industries Corporation), later named Nikon Corporation, Nikon cameras were introduced in the United States in 1948. Since then, their technology has continued evolving, making them the most trusted brand among professional photographers and hobbyist today. Here’s how Nikon cameras have developed over the years:

1948 - Nikon’s First 35mm Camera

Labeled the Nikon One, this was the company’s first 35mm camera and rangefinder with 50/2 collapsible lenses. As one of the most popular cameras among collectors, the Nikon One is difficult to obtain. The earliest lenses for these Nikon cameras are identifiable by their heavy front and rear caps and a distinct “MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN” engraving.

1959 - Nikon’s First SLR Camera

It was around this time that SLR cameras were first being introduced into the market, and Nikon’s engineers felt this would become the future of photography, and created their own. The Nikon F wasn’t the first 35mm SLR camera to be made, nor was it considered the best camera in the market. Between 1959 and 1974 however, the Nikon F continued to be manufactured with minor modifications that let the user add attachments and lenses.

In 1979 Nikon redesigned the look of their camera, releasing the Nikon EM. These Nikon cameras were more compact, lightweight, and easier to use, making them ideal for nonprofessionals. With the Nikon EM’s new look, the accessories used for any camera within the Nikon F series no longer fit, and a new line of lenses and other attachments was made.

1999 - Nikon’s First Digital Camera

The Nikon D1 was the first fully integrated digital SLR camera. Before this, a digital bolt-on attachment was used on 35mm film SLR cameras. Unlike the digital cameras that are made today, the Nikon D1 uses NTSC color space rather than sRGB or Adobe RGB color spaces, which can create photos with unique color schemes. Today’s Nikon DSLR cameras are an extension of the Nikon D1 series.
