You may have seen the Hoover Dam in pictures and read about it in books, but visiting the actual site is a breathtaking experience. Before you start planning a Hoover Dam tour, it helps to know the historical background that makes this structure so incredible. Here are some fascinating facts about this Arizona tourist attraction.

4 Facts to Know Before Taking a Hoover Dam Tour

1. Its Name Caused Controversy

Herbert Hoover was the President of the United States when the plan for this dam was announced in 1930. The Secretary of the Interior declared the dam would be named after the President as he officially opened the project for construction. However, the name was changed to “Boulder Dam” in 1933 when the new government took over. It wasn't until 1947 that President Harry Truman signed an official declaration that reverted the site’s name to “Hoover Dam.”

The dam was considered to be an architectural wonder at the time, as it connected the neighboring states of Nevada, California, and Arizona. Today, it is the primary source of power for more than 1.3 million people throughout these states.

3. It Was a Target of Nazi Conspiracy

At the onset of the Second World War in 1939, a Nazi plot to blow up the dam was uncovered by the United States government. The main point of the conspiracy was to destroy the main source of energy for the aviation industry based in California. While the government did consider painting the dam with camouflage colors, they didn't need to, as the German plan was caught and stopped in time.

4. It Was Once the Largest Dam in the World

At the time of its inauguration in 1936, Hoover Dam was the largest of its kind in the world. Standing at 726 feet, it had a much larger capacity than the previous record holder, Owyhee Dam in Oregon. Its record was eventually taken by the Mauvoisin Dam in Switzerland in 1957.
