Wells are generally reliable, convenient sources of water for homes. However, these systems have several components that can occasionally malfunction, including the water well pump. If you've noticed low water pressure in your home, here's what to know about how this part could be to blame and how a contractor can restore the flow rate.

Why Does Your Water Well Pump Have Low Pressure?

1. Pressure Switch

A faulty water well pump pressure switch may be to blame for a low flow rate. The regulator in the tank signals the pump to increase pressure when the tank drops below a specific pounds per square inch (PSI), typically 40.

Most switches contain a spring and electrical components, which can wear out and malfunction. It may also need to be readjusted to a higher setting. A contractor may need to clean this part so that it can function correctly. This should always be done by a professional, as they'll know how to navigate the wires safely.

2. Air Bladder

The air volume in the bladder, or diaphragm, expands or contracts as water pressure changes, exerting force on the liquid to increase pressure. If it is under-inflated, it cannot function properly and must be recharged.

A professional will need to drain the part before checking the pressure and adjusting it to approximately 30 psi. If the pressure can't be restored this way, they may need to replace the bladder tank.

3. Filter

Most wells have a sediment filter that can become clogged, resulting in reduced pressure. Generally, the filter should be changed every six months to maintain optimal water cleanliness and flow. However, if your local water supply contains a high degree of sediment, you may need to change the filter more frequently.

A contractor can advise you as to how often this is required. You can also have a professional add a pressure gauge to the water filtration system. When there's a 10 psi drop in pressure, you'll know that it's time to change the filter.
