The pump is the heart of any well system. It pulls water upward from the well and into the pipes that deliver the water to your home. A failing water well pump will jeopardize your access to your water supply, so repairs should be a priority. But, first, you need to know what to look for; here are four common signs that a well pump needs to be fixed or replaced.
How to Tell If Your Water Well Pump Is Failing
1. Lack of Water
No water coming from the taps is often the most obvious sign of a failing pump. There are a number of things that can cause a pump to stop drawing in water. Electrical problems, a broken pipe, and dry conditions lowering the water table are all possible causes.
2. Low Water Pressure
If water is noticeably slower leaving your faucets, the pump may be to blame. Bacteria can accumulate inside the pump components and along the interiors of your pipes, which can slow the movement of water and air through the system.
Poor water pressure can also be the result of a pump that is simply too small to meet the water needs of the home. This is more common in homes that have recently added another bathroom or another water-utilizing fixture or appliance.
3. Unclean Water
Ideally, water should be crisp and clear when it comes out of the taps. Buildup of dirt, sand, or other fine particles can indicate a serious pump malfunction. The pump filter may need to be cleaned or replaced, or the size of the pump itself may be too powerful for the size of your well, pulling in so much water that it's drawing in sediment as well.
4. A Constantly Running Pump
If your well pump is running around the clock, there's a good chance it will eventually burn itself out. Pumps can cycle on and off repeatedly or run continuously for any number of reasons, including leaks, pressure tank issues, and a faulty pressure control switch. You'll also likely notice increases in your electric bill, as it takes a lot of power to keep a pump in constant or near-constant action.
