If you’re among the millions of Americans who get their water from private wells, you may already know that well water can taste noticeably different from municipal supplies. However, unpleasant or odd flavors in your water can be a warning sign that it’s time to schedule well cleaning or repairs. Here are a few explanations behind poor-tasting well water and what you can do about it.

A Guide to Bad Well Water Flavors

1. Tartness

When your tap water tastes tart, sharp, or slightly sour, it’s likely due to a higher-than-normal concentration of tannins. These are naturally occurring chemical compounds, also known as polyphenols, which are found in abundance in wood, tree bark, vines, and soil.

Tannins typically enter groundwater sources through soil seepage as organic matter on the surface decomposes. Although it isn’t possible to prevent this natural process, periodic well cleaning and the addition of a filtration system can substantially reduce the number of tannins in your water.

2. Metal

well cleaning

Metallic tastes in water are typically due to improper pH balances or the presence of zinc, iron, and manganese in either the well or the surrounding soil. Iron and manganese, for example, are naturally occurring in groundwater sources, while zinc can seep into well water as galvanized pipes and plumbing fixtures corrode.

Although these metals rarely appear in well water in concentrations high enough to pose a health concern, they can degrade plumbing fixtures and appliances, stain clothing and dishes, and taste unpleasant. It may be necessary to have your well inspected for damaged plumbing or to install an acid-neutralizing filter to correct the pH balance.

3. Dirt or Soil

If your water has a musty, earthy, or fishy taste, it could be caused by algal blooms in the well. These occur when cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, grow out of control and produce foul-tasting toxins. Alternatively, it could be a sign of bacterial growth in the water or plumbing systems.

In either case, consuming water affected by algae or bacteria can significantly raise the risk of getting sick. Schedule a well inspection and well cleaning as soon as possible and avoid consuming water with a dirt-like flavor until the system has been cleaned and deemed safe.
