Winter weather can wreak havoc on your water well pump. Even though the pump is underground, the freezing temperatures can harden the soil and cause issues to develop. Here are four preventive tips for keeping your well’s pump in good shape throughout the winter.

How to Winterize Your Water Well Pump

1. Install A Well House

These small structures fit snugly over the top of the water well and protect against the elements. They’re made from a sturdy plastic material and feature a door at the front for easy access. A trash bin will work as an alternative in a pinch. Stack two on top of each other with insulation in between for added insulation.

2. Wrap the Pipes

Reduce the potential for freezing by wrapping each in a layer of insulation. Foam covers, old fabrics, and insulating tape are common materials to use.

3. Insert Heat Cables

Heat cables, also known as heat tape, contain wiring that conducts electricity. This produces a small level of warmth that keeps pipes from freezing. You can wrap them directly around the surface of the pipes before applying insulation to ensure total protection. A thermostat will help them maintain a consistent temperature.

4. Set Up a Heat Lamp

These small lamps fit directly under the roof of the well house. The level of heat they produce is more than enough to stave off freezing winter temperatures without jeopardizing the condition of your well house. There’s a variety of sizes available to ensure the perfect fit.
