Summer is a popular time of year for travel. If you’re heading out of town for a vacation, you should take a few precautionary steps to ensure your home is secure. From scheduling new lock installations to keeping valuables safe, here’s how to prepare your residence.

How to Secure Your Home Before Traveling

1. Keep Up Appearances

To avoid the appearance that your home is unoccupied, stop any routine deliveries or have a trusted person like a neighbor or friend pick up the items while you're away. Don’t allow newspapers to pile up at your door, and put a hold on the mail and any other subscription services. Set your lights to turn on automatically by purchasing a timer switch from a hardware store.

2. Store Valuables Safely

If there are any expensive items within view of your home’s windows, put them away before leaving. Make sure jewelry, cash, and collectibles are out of sight. If you have high-value electronics, such as laptops, you might also consider placing them in a locked storage area.

3. Check the Windows

Windows can be easy entry points for trespassers, especially if they’re unlocked and on the ground level. Before you head out, make sure your windows are not only firmly shut, but also locked. If any are broken, try to have them repaired before the trip.

4. Wait to Post on Social Media

It can be tempting to share your vacation adventures online, but consider waiting until you’ve returned to post on social media. Otherwise, you’ll be advertising that your home is currently vacant. At the very least, consider updating the privacy settings so that the general public and friends of friends can’t view the posts.

5. Test Door Locks

Inspect all the entrances to your home to make sure the doors close and lock firmly. If the locks are particularly old, you may need a new lock installation. Over time, the components of locks can rust and weaken, making it easier for doors to be forced open.

Even if you have a newer lock, an added layer of protection might be worth considering. For instance, you could schedule a lock installation for a deadbolt or alarm lock as an additional security measure.
